The neighborhood
The Duomo district is the heart of the city and Florence’s cathedral, better known as Santa Maria del Fiore, is one of the largest church in the world. Its construction lasted until 1436 but the originally planned Gothic front facade however was unrealized. The magnificent marble cladding that we see today was only added much later in a neo-Gothic style with colorful patterns. As a result the facade nicely complements the design of the cathedral’s fourteenth-century bell tower. Some statues that were created for the originally planned facade are now on display at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, a nearby museum dedicated to works of art from the cathedral. The dome of the Duomo was the world’s largest when it was completed in 1436 and still towers over the city. Brunelleschi managed to create the enormous dome without supports thanks to an ingenious design which consisted of an inner shell made of bricks with a herringbone pattern and a horizontal stone chain, which reduced stress and allowed the weight to be evenly distributed. Walking south from Piazza del Duomo, passing through Via dei Calzaiuoli, one of the city’s main thoroughfares, you will find Piazza della Repubblica, today theatre to street artists and shows, particularly after sunset. The square is home to the historical Caffé Gilli, Caffé Paskowski and Caffé delle Giubbe Rosse, which were meeting points for many artists and writers in the past, while today is the heart of the city’s fashion district.
Getting around
Florence city centre is a ZTL zone which stands for “limited traffic zone” and therefore special rules apply to when you can enter this area. This particular apartment is in fact located within the ZTL zone so this means that if you are thinking of coming to Florence by car and wish to drive around and park, then you will need to pay special attention to the road signs, CCTV cameras and access cameras (they will show either a red /green light) in order to avoid receiving fines. Guests who need to travel within the ZTL zone by car to reach their apartment are advised to contact one of the private garages in the centre (the one nearest the apartment you are staying in) and obtain a temporary access permit. Upon arrival at the garage, guests must specify their need for access in the ZTL and the garage will then note the vehicle’s number plate and forward it to the appropriate police headquarters.
Walking distance to all the major attractions of the historic center.
The train station (Santa Maria Novella) is walking distance, all the buses stop just in the closest streets. But the best way to visit Florence is walking around. Florence is a small town and I highly suggest not to come by car. Parking is expensive.
