## Neighborhood
The area surrounding the square is popular for its restaurants and hotels and appreciated for its modern architecture and green spaces.
Many tourists visiting Milan choose to stay in the Piazza della Repubblica area, a shady square full of greenery, monuments and fountains. Within walking distance of the square are some of the city's best restaurants and prestigious hotels. The square was built in 1865 to house the then-new Central Station. Today it is a busy modern crossroads north of the historic center.
In Republic Square you can admire some of the best examples of modern architecture in our peninsula. It is overlooked by many of the Lombard capital's skyscrapers, including the Torre Breda, one of the tallest buildings in Milan, designed by the famous architect Luigi Mattioni.
Sit in the park in the center and watch the Milanese cross the square to reach the offices, which are numerous in this area. You can see several monuments in the park, including a statue dedicated to Giuseppe Mazzini, a 19th-century patriot.
The Piazza della Repubblica neighborhood is full of restaurants, pizzerias, and trattorias, where you can enjoy risotto alla milanese (with saffron), ossobuco, and local cheeses, washed down with a good glass of San Colombano or Barbera. Modern cafes with diners serve meals for workers during lunch breaks and aperitifs toward evening. Before returning to your hotel, stop at an ice cream shop and choose from the countless flavors of gelato or indulge in a nightcap at one of the bars.
Piazza della Repubblica is particularly crowded during business days, during the hours when the offices are open, while it is quieter on weekends.
## Getting around
The square can be reached by subway, with a dedicated stop, or on foot from Central Station which is 900m away.
